Should landlords be allowed to use algorithms to set rent?

Their goal is to price gouge you. Restricting them could be the move.

They can do whatever they want. Free country. Live somewhere cheaper if a calculator bothers you that much.

yeah people can totally just teleport somewhere cheaper with their job and whole life

Sure? You want to limit landlords ability to use a computer?

No.. a landlord using a spreadsheet is fine duh. But when the software recommends leaving units empty rather than lowering rent we have a problem.

The issue isn't "using a computer." It's landlords feeding nonpublic lease data into the same pricing system and then following its recommendations. Regulate the data sharing and coordinated conduct. Nobody cares if a landlord uses Excel.

Only with real transparency and antitrust oversight. Ten landlords implementing the same price looks a lot like price fixing. Put em in jail.

Transparency should include telling tenants when software set the price and what data it used.
