I'm guessing that it used to just get energy from algae by breaking down nutrients, but somehow some of them stored the chloroplasts instead of pooping it out. And over time some of them used the energy generated by the chloroplasts, and those flourished.

I wish humans could do things like this. Imagine eating eating a lion and you just grow crazy sharp teeth and a tail.
